Now that you know about greek weapons and how the Battle of Marathon started, it's time to learn what happened. The Persians set out to Greece with 600 ships and 20,000 soldiers. Unfortunately, the Greeks only had 10,000 soldiers. That's crazy! The Persians had double the soldiers compared to the Greeks. The Persians may have had more soldiers, but the Greeks had a better strategy. The Greeks had soldiers in the middle of a valley which makes it easy for the Persians to surround them. But the Greeks didn't only have soldiers in the valley, other soldiers on the outside were waiting for the Persians to come into the valley so they could surround the Persians. So, the Greeks had a strong perimeter and were able to destroy the Persians in an epic battle. I think that was an amazing defeat because the Greeks had 10,000 while the Persians had 20,000 soldiers. As soon as the battle ended the Greeks sent there best messenger Pheidippides who ran 26 miles all the way to Athens. Pheidippides told the Athenians that the Greeks won, and then Pheidippides died. In all, the Greeks had a glorious victory. To learn more click video for and informational video, or click here to learn more.
This Blog is all about the Battle of Marathon. The battle of Marathon is one of the first battles of the Persian war. When I was four years old I had always been interested in ancient Greece. When it was bedtime my dad and mom would read Greek myths to me. My dad was always taking me to art museums to see greek art and statues. When I was six years old I knew a lot about greek myths and art, we even named our dog Griffin after the half-bird, half lion creature. This blog has given me a chance to learn about greek war and how they protected their city. I want to make this blog also to learn how the people in ancient times fought with other communities compared to how we fight today. This topic is meaningful because it will expand my knowledge about Greek history and how their city worked. Also because I like knowing how we have changed in our way of fighting. |
